ARt and Design

Intent

Picture

At George Grenville, we believe that art is a vital part of a child’s education. Art provides children with a range of opportunities to express their individual creativity, whilst making links with a wide spectrum of styles of art in society. By the time that children leave George Grenville, we aim for them to have a well-rounded experience of different art forms and have explored a range of professional artists.
Our vision is that the children at George Grenville will be able to build skills and knowledge of different art forms, understand and appreciate a variety of artist's styles and approaches and have the ability to discuss and reflect on their own work and the work of others.

The art curriculum at George Grenville will engage, inspire and challenge children, equipping them with the knowledge and skills to experiment, invent and create their own works of art, craft and design. As children progress through the school, they should be able to think critically and develop a more rigorous understanding of art and design.

Implementation

At George Grenville, the teaching and implementation of art is based on the National Curriculum and linked to our themes. Art is mapped out across the school to ensure that as a pupil progresses through the school, they will learn and further develop key skills and techniques. They will practice and develop mastery in the key process of art: printing, drawing, painting, textiles, sculpture and collage. Within these key process, a pupil will explore different types of art and a range of artists.

We use tailored knowledge organisers to ensure skills and knowledge are built on.

Children at George Grenville will have the opportunity to practice skills and these will be recorded in a sketch book. They will also have the opportunity to create larger more final pieces for many of the art skills taught.

Impact

Throughout time at George Grenville, the children will fill sketch books which will show the progression of skills across the years. As the children revisit skills during school, they will be able to reflect on their own art work and progression.
