Physical Education

Intent

At George Grenville Academy, we recognise the importance of Physical Education and the role it has to play in promoting long-term, healthy, active lifestyles. The intent of our Physical Education curriculum is to provide all children with high quality Physical Educational and sport provision. Our vision is for every pupil to succeed and achieve their potential as well as lead physically active lifestyles. At GGA, with support from Nxt Level Coaching (NLC), we strive to inspire pupils through fun and engaging Physical Education lessons that are enjoyable, challenging, yet accessible to all. We want our pupils to appreciate the benefits of a healthy and physically active lifestyle. Through our teaching of PE, we will provide opportunities for pupils to develop values and transferrable life skills, such as fairness, equality, respect, confidence and perseverance. We want to go further than just educating children on the basic fundamentals of sports; we want to start children on a journey to find a sport for life, help them understand the importance of physical activity and how they can incorporate it into their current and future lifestyle.

Implementation

At GGA we aim to set each child on their journey to a healthy and active lifestyle, through a well-structured and planned PE programme that focuses on them as individuals. We focus on the personal development of each individual; helping them acquire and enhance their skills, and targeting their spiritual, moral, social, cultural, emotional and physical wellbeing values. Implementing these values into PE lessons allows each pupil to learn, adapt and challenge themselves. Our lessons are designed to teach transferrable skills, such as communication, problem solving, adaptability and resilience, whilst collaborating with the GGA values (teamwork, respect, confidence, perseverance, integrity and aspiration). In addition to this, we ensure that all pupils are given the tools to lead healthy and active lifestyles. During our lessons, we aim to support each individual and recognise their true selves and abilities, in order to celebrate their own successes and accomplishments.

Specialist Teaching Staff

We employ specialist sport coaches to work alongside our PE coordinator, as we believe the value this adds to quality of education is extremely important.

Enriching the PE Curriculum

As a school we are part of the Buckingham School Sports Partnership, and participate in many sporting events across the academic year. There are many events that take place, including: Year 5/6 football, Year 3/4 tennis and KS1 multi-skills. Throughout a pupil's time at Grenville, we aim to ensure that every child participates in at least one event and we endeavour to tailor these to each pupil’s needs and interests.

Furthermore, The School Games Mark is a government led awards scheme to reward schools for their commitment to the development of competition across their school and into the community. Participating in this process allows George Grenville to evaluate our PE provision and assists us in developing an action plan for future progress. We currently hold the Silver award for 2018/2019.

PE Lessons During Lockdown

Picture
During lockdown, the children at George Grenville Academy took part in recorded PE lessons and daily challenges to keep them active and connected to school. Please click on this link to take you to our remote PE page to find out what the children were learning.

Impact

By the end of each key stage, pupils are expected to know, apply and understand the matters, skills and processes specified in the relevant PE knowledge organiser.

Pupils at George Grenville Academy leave us with an understanding of how to lead active, healthy lifestyles whilst having optimistic attitudes towards their mental health. Furthermore, they will have the skills to support themselves emotionally, physically and morally, and have many attributes and values to be able to lead positive themselves in their day-to-day lives, beyond their time at George Grenville.
