History and Geography drive the thematic curriculum at Grenville. We follow the National Curriculum but piece it together carefully to ensure knowledge builds systematically, enabling the children to know more and remember more. Throughout their school journey, children develop a range of historical vocabulary, build a knowledge of chronology and develop enquiry skills through exploring a variety of historical sources. They are also challenged to question decisions made in the past and identify what can be learnt.
Local history is built into topics where possible, to enable children to develop understanding of their own cultural heritage and enable them to identify more closely with the themes that are explored.
It is our intention, that children leave Grenville with a secure understanding of chronology and understand that history is taking place all the time and we need to open our eyes, take notice and learn lessons for the future.
The school uses the Key Stage History website, where teachers can access high quality resources and research to support their teaching. History lessons are taught discreetly but form part of a wider topic or theme linking curriculum subjects together with teachers using bespoke Knowledge Organisers to plan from. A high quality book is chosen to read to the class alongside the theme. When history is not being taught, a class history box is used to revise previous history topics taught during their time at Grenville. This is to develop a 'stickability' for the knowledge taught.
